To rebuild Somalia/Sool Puntland State of Somalia after 24 years of civil war and economic decay is a daunting task. Yet, we believe there are two key words which make this task possible: community and family. In the United States, there is a large and vibrant Somali diaspora community whose members desperately want to help those in their homeland who struggle to realize life’s basic necessities. This community has not forgotten its mother country and longs to be a FACE of Hope for all Somalis. The second key word is family. It is in and through empowering families that we open the door to improvements in health, education, gender relations, youth and economic security.
These look like small steps but they are, in fact, large steps in communities where so much is to be done. We must find a way to touch people in the communities where they live, on their terms. We must find a way to reach them and teach them the basic skills so that, collectively, they can make a difference. We can make a difference here. Please help us in our effort to reach these communities so that with these small steps, taken with love and compassion, we can help create an opportunity for peace and prosperity and begin to build a foundation for health education and health care that is critical to the long term development and sustainment of these communities.
